A poultry farm of brutalization!

Author: Manos Tsaldaris

  {Cells in which traffickers were holding Romanian workers as hostages, forcing them to live in squalid conditions.}

A new «Manolada»-like case has seen the light of day in the Municipality of Erymanthos in Achaia. This time the victims were immigrants from Romania, who were detained as «prisoners» in rooms like cells, at a large poultry farm business. The public was terribly shocked yesterday, after the arrest of the owner and a fellow countryman of the immigrants who «welcomed» them in Greece, while one more Romanian who approached them in Romania by promising them ample payments remains wanted by the police.

But when those who believed him came here, the modern ‘traffickers’ threw them into a building without heating, forced them to live in inhumane conditions and made them work without rest or payment, at gunpoint. They did not even hesitate to use their guns to intimidate them, by shooting either in the air or close to their feet.

The case was revealed a few days ago, when two Romanians who had come to Greece early January managed to escape and come to the Romanian embassy in Athens, where they denounced the slavery conditions. The police was informed and the investigations were carried out by the Subdivision of Organized Crime and Human Trafficking of the Security Directorate of Attica. In an operation performed yesterday morning, the 51-year-old Greek owner of the poultry farm and the 41-year-od Romanian who picked them up were arrested, while seven other Romanians – victims of the “traffickers” – were released.

During the investigation, about €1.5 million was found in a safe built in a wall and apart from the money, a luxury car, a gun with 90 cartridges, two shotguns and pepper sprays were also seized.

A case file of felony nature has been formed against the arrested men and the Romanian wanted one, for human trafficking and breaching the laws about prevention and suppression of money laundering from criminal activities and weapons. Yesterday, they were taken to the Prosecutor of Patras.

Promises As found by the investigation, the wanted Romanian, exploiting the dire economic situation of his fellow countrymen and promised them legal work in our country, with good conditions and adequate salary, received their consent and persuaded them to travel to our country to work in the farm owned by the 51-year-old Greek in Achaia.

The imprisoned immigrants worked at gunpoint.

On their arrival in Patras, they were picked up by the two arrested men and put in a «shack» where they lived in appalling sanitary conditions, with insufficient food and total lack of heating, and then forced to work every day from morning to night without rest. While working, they were continuously watched over and in many cases the 51-year-old owner was carrying a rifle or pistol and when he thought the workers had a low “performance” he did not hesitate to shoot.

It is worth noting that the owner had been accused and arrested before, in February 2013, for the same offense and for social security contribution evasion, as he employed eight uninsured workers. In this case, a 20-year-old Romanian woman had been released, who was detained by force and threats and forced to work on a 14- hour-day basis without payment, although he had promised to pay her a € 500-salary without insurance or healthcare. Nevertheless, the 51-year-old man remained at liberty.

Editorial Note:

Our Assembly, «Plateia Molaon», condemns the exploitation, the power and confinement imposed on our poor brothers from Romania.

We declare that such inhuman behavior phenomena have no place in civilized societies and of course have nothing to do with the different nationalities but with class differences and the exploitation of poverty!

We will continue to fight together with our class brothers and sisters from around the world against the power and exploitation exerted from one person to another.

Direct-Democratic Assembly of Laconia «Plateia Molaon» 13/3/15
